Although I’ve known about palm oil for a few years now, in the last year or so I’ve developed a greater understanding of its impacts. The other day I was having a think (as ya do) and a click just switched. I thought why am I continuing to buy products that contain palm oil when it’s so environmentally destructive! And that’s when I made the decision in my head…the decision to stop eating products that contain palm oil, or to only buy products that contain sustainable palm oil.
I told my friend about this the other day and she said “but why? It’s not like you’re going to change the world by yourself”. And no, of course I’m not going to change the world by myself (or maybe I will…there’s nothing like a bitta optimism) but if everyone had that mindset then nothing would change.
This palm oil free and sustainable palm oil lifestyle has been going strong for just under two weeks now and whilst I’ve found it challenging, it hasn’t been as challenging as I thought it would have been (which really surprised me as palm oil is contained in so many products)…
As you can see from the image above, palm oil is in a variety of products, from food and detergents, to cosmetics and the odd product here and there such as toothpaste. I’ve started off by cutting out all food products that contain palm oil or use unsustainable palm oil. My next step is to start cutting out cosmetics and detergents. Originally I thought that I wouldn’t find the cosmetics side so difficult (as the only makeup I wear is mascara)… but the more I thought about it, the more difficult it became! First lip balm came to the door, followed by eye remover and moisturisers!
Just from this week and a bit, I’ve already learnt lessons! It really helps to make your food from scratch using fresh ingredients and avoiding frozen, microwave and other pre-made meals that often contain palm oil. When you’re conscious and think about what your purchasing it’s much easier.
Anyway, over the weeks i’ll be updating you with recipes and products that I have found to fit in with my new palm oil free and sustainable palm oil lifestyle, as well as writing articles on the subject.
